New Mills Dam Repair – October 2026 – Temporary water level reduction may effect timing of boat and dock removals.
Necessary repairs/replacements of the stanchion spillway vertical posts on New Mills Dam will require that water level on Pleasant Pond and the stream be lowered by 3 feet below normal full pond (summer levels) for approcximately 2-3 days in early October. The pond is normally drawn down to winter level beginning in early October, so this means residents may need to consider pulling boats earlier than usual. Specific dates will be announced later this summer. Once the work is completed, it will take 2-3 days to refill the pond to winter levels. During this water level reduction, the Town of Litchfield will repair the Thorofare Road boat launches while they have better access for the work. The launches will therefore be unavailable for a approximately a week for hauling out or launching boats.
Cobbossee Watershed District (CWD) – Updating the Pleasant Pond Management Plan
Personnel of the CWD have begun the process of updating their mangement plan for Pleasant Pond to improve water quality and reduce inputs of phosphorus from non-point sources. A major part of the project is an inventory and evaluation of camp roads around the lake. CWD personnel will visit each camp road and will make recommendations to local residents, as warranted, about how they can reduce runoff from their roads that otherwise loads phosphorus into the pond. Phosophorus is the main nutrient that drives algal and cyanobacteria blooms in the pond during mid to late summer each year. A few roads have been done this spring, the rest will be evaluated beginning in the fall. The PPCSLA is seeking volunteers from each camp road to walk their road with the CWD folks and hear their recommendations. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Greg Anderson at: anderson.gregoryj.me@gmail.com.
Thorofare Road boat launch rehabilitation project 2026: At the Litchfield Town Meeting in 2025, the town approved an expenditure of $15,000 (with an additional $5000 appropriated in 2026) to rebuild the boat launches on Thorofare Road. Although originally planned for fall 2025, a change in Public Works personnel has delayed the project until Fall of 2026. The renewed launch ramps are will use deeper concrete “ties,” which should improve the launch experience for everyone. The work is planned to coincide with drawdown of the pond level for repair to New Mills Dam in early October 2026. This information will be updated periodically as it becomes available.
